  1. Complex Fractions and Unit Rates Objective: I will simplify complex fractions MAFS.7.RP.1.1: Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. MAFS.7.RP.1.3: Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error. (

  2. Do Now • In ¼ hour, Aaron walks 7/8 mile. What is the rate in miles per hour?

  3. Complex fractions • You have decided to remodel your bathroom and put tile on the floor. The bathroom is in the shape of a rectangle and the floor measures 14 ft8 in long, 5 ft 6 in wide. The tile you wants to use costs $5/each and each tile covers 4 2/3 sq ft. If you only have $100, do you have enough money?

  4. Complex fractions Step 1: Make a model 14ft 8 in 5 ft 6 in 12 in = 1 ft A= b . h

  5. Complex fractions Step 2: convert to same unit rate (ft) ** all units must be the same** 14 8ft = 14 2ft = 44 5 6ft = 5 1 ft = 11 12 3 3 12 2 2

  6. Complex fractions Step 3: Calculate area using the formula A=b.h A= ( 5 ½) x (14 2/3) = (11/2) x (44/3) = 242/3 A= 80 2/3 sqft

  7. Complex fractions Step 4: Calculate Ratio 80 2242 3 3 4 214 3 3

  8. Complex fractions Step 5 : Multiply tiles per cost 18 tiles x $5 = $90 Enough?

  9. Complex fractions • Example: There is ¼ tbsp. of salt to every 2/3 cup of water in a recipe. Calculate the proportion.

  10. Complex fractions • Your turn: You are working with a recipe that calls for 2 1/3 cup of chicken stock and ½ tsp. of pepper to serve 4 people. How much of each ingredient will you need if you plan to serve 6 people.

  11. Unit Rates • Reflection: What factors will you consider when buying a car? Mileage, gas, horsepower?
