IBM Technology LeadershipOver 50 Years of Tape Innovation First IBM 726 Tape Unit • At 7,500 cps it was 56 times faster than punch cards • With 100 bpi it could store the equivalent of 35,000 punch cards • 100% of the tapes were inspected with a microscope and knife…defects would be cut out and sent back to the manufacturer 1848 George Boole invents binary algebra 1998 LTO Roadmap Announced 1952 IBM 726 1st magnetic tape drive 1964 IBM 2104 1st read/back drive 1995 IBM 3590 2006 LTO Gen3 HH 2004 LTO Gen3 2002 LTO Gen2 O P E N / E N T E R P R I S E E N T E R P R I S E 1999 IBM 3590E 1928, IBM invents the 80 column Punch Card 1959 IBM 729 1st read/write drive 1984 IBM 3480 1st cartridge drive 2000 LTO Gen1 2003 3592 (Gen1) 2005 TS1120 (Gen2) 2007 LTO Gen4
Over 1,500,000 LTO drives and 61 million LTO cartridges shipped! Why IBM Media?Optimized for IBM tape solutions Developed in parallel with IBM drives & automation to : • Maximize performance • Minimize data loss • Improve media longevity Tested extensively on IBM drives & automation IBM’s strong linkage between R&D, Manufacturing, Product Management and Product Field Engineering contribute to quality throughout the product life-cycle. Provides end-to-end accountability
Why IBM Media?Stringent Quality Control Strict quality control is exercised throughout tape production and media assembly for IBM Media Not all drives & media are created equally, certification alone is not a statement of quality. • IBM LTO media, drives and automation successfully pass strict testing that goes beyond LTO specifications Limited Lifetime Warranty - Free from workmanship in materials for 5 years

IBM LTO Ultrium 4 800GB Cartridge New ! LTO 4 800GB Rewritable Cartridge MTM 3589-011 (P/N 95P4436) LTO 4 800GB WORM Cartridge MTM 3589-033 (P/N 95P4450) • High Capacity, high reliability for LTO Ultrium Generation 4 storage environments • 800 GB (1.6 TB or 1600 GB with 2:1 compression) physical capacity – Higher capacity per volume requires less library cartridge capacity and helps reduce backup windows by requiring less mounts • Data that is encrypted by LTO Ultrium 4 drives can be stored on both rewritable and WORM media to help maintain data integrity • LTO 4 drives continue to use the LTO Universal Cleaning Cartridge MTM 3589-004 (P/N 35L2086)
LTO Cartridge Interchangeability for IBM Drives Gen 4 Note: Gen 3 Half-height and Full-height drive use the same media
LTO 4 Media Compatibility No Gen1 reads Gen2 Up to 35MB/s (no encryption) reads & writes Gen3 Up to 80MB/s (no encryption) reads & writes Gen4 Up to 120MB/s (encryption capable) Gen4
IBM LTO Generation 4 Tape Drive Features • 1.6 TB* Capacity & 240 MBps* Data throughput • New Gen4 data and WORM media • 4GB native fiber channel, 3GB SAS, Ultra160 SCSI interfaces • Backwards read & write compatibility - read/write Gen3, read Gen2 • Encryption Enabled - 256 AES Encryption ( only for FC and SAS ) * Assumes 2:1 Compression
IBM LTO Drives – At a Glance Comparison * Assumes 2:1 Compression

Protection of Consumer InformationA Big Issue • Many government agencies are requiring disclosure of security breaches • 32 states have security breach similar legislation (Source: www.Privacyrights.org) • Similar United States legislation has been proposed • Industry organizations are also increasing scrutiny of security procedures. • (Source: Payment Card Industry Security Audit Procedures Version 1) • Over 150 million consumers have been notified of potential security breaches regarding personal information since 2/2005 • (Source: www.Privacyrights.org)
Customer Tape Data Protection Challenges • Protect tape data when removed from the primary data center • Protect tape data generated by a different applications on different systems • Allow access to data after it has arrived at the business continuance site of business partner • Employ a consistent management strategy across different applications ,systems and locations
EncryptionA powerful tool for protecting information • Data is encrypted by applying an encryption method and a “key” • A common encryption technique is the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) • Keys are random bit-streams of predetermined lengths • 128, 192 and 256 bits • Encrypted data is unreadable without access to the “key” • If encrypted data is exposed, it is generally not considered a security breach • Encryption “Key Management” is managed in the application, at the system level or through the tape library
Why Outboard Encryption in the LTO Gen 4 Tape Drive? • High performance • Encryption in the LTO Gen 4 tape drive (FC and SAS) can be performed at native data rates • Less than 1% performance impact • Minimizes impact on the batch processing window • Lower overall cost • Leverages traditional tape storage processes and infrastructure • Supports compression and encryption – maintaining media storage efficiency • Eliminates need for unique dedicated appliance hardware or server resources to perform encryption • Builds on proven tape encryption leadership • IBM was industries first tape encryption provider with the TS1120 Tape Drive
