The New Georgia Graduation Rule Began with the 2007-2008 Freshman Class Changes to the graduation rule were made to adhere to the Georgia Performance Standards and the American Diploma Project For parents/guardians with older students, the Old System had 4 tiers 1) College Prep, 2) College Prep w/ distinction, 3) Technology & Career 4) Technology & Career w/ distinction The New system has 1 set of requirements Objective: All High School Graduates will be Prepared for College and the Workplace.

  3. Special Education Students • Special Education students and their parent/guardian participate in all advisement opportunities along with regular education students. • Each special education student’s Individualized Education Plan guides course work and graduation requirements.

  4. Graduation Requirements 4 Units of English 4 Units of Science 4 Units of Mathematics 3 Units of Social Studies 3 Units of Career/Technology and/or World Language and/or Fine Arts 1 Unit of Health & Physical Education 4 Units of Electives (minimum) A total of 23 Units Note: World Language (Foreign Language) is not required for Graduation BUT is required for acceptance into a 4 year College or University

  5. English\Language Arts Requirements 4 TOTAL units of English\Language Arts These must include: * 1 unit of 9th grade Literature and Composition * 1 unit of American Literature and Composition *2 additional units in English\Language Arts

Math Requirements 9th Grade: Mathematics I (Algebra/Geometry/Statistics) or Accelerated Mathematics I (Geometry/Algebra II/ Statistics) There is a Math Support I course that may be required for some students in need of extra support. This runs parallel with Math I. 10th Grade: Mathematics II (Geometry/Algebra II/Statistics) or Accelerated Mathematics II (Advanced Algebra /Geometry/Statistics) There is a Math Support II course that may be required for some students in need of extra support. This runs parallel with Math II. 11th Grade: Mathematics III (Advanced Algebra/ Statistics) or Accelerated Mathematics III (Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry/Statistics) There is a Math Support III course that may be required for some students in need of extra support. This runs parallel with Math III. 12 Grade: Mathematics IV(Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry/Statistics) or AP Calculus AB

Science Requirements 4 Total Units of Science Required 1 unit of Biology (can be AP/IB) 1 unit of Chemistry, Earth Systems, Environmental Science or an AP/IB Course 1 unit of Physical Science or Physics (AP/IB) 1 unit of a 4th science (any AP/IB. academic science or career tech science) *****4th Science may be used to meet both the science and elective requirements.*****

Why should I take Honors classes? • The U.S. Department of Education released a study that shows that by the time students enter college, the type of courses they took in high school is more important than test scores, class rank, or grade averages. • Michael Adams, President of UGA, says that rigor of curriculum is a factor above all others that determines success in the college admissions process.

  12. There is an online application process. The link is on the main Paulding County School District website. What do I need to do to get into Honors classes?

  13. How are Honors classes beneficial to my GPA? • Honors courses are weighted. With successful completion of the course, an average of 70 or above BEFORE weights are added, earns a student five (5) points onto the final course average. • For example: Student earns an 80 in Honors Lit/Comp – the report card and transcript will reflect an 85 as the weighted points are added to the final average. (Advanced Placement courses add 10 points to the final grade, if a 70 or above has been earned.)

  15. You and your student MUST • Attend the high school informational nights for Honors and AP courses • The dates and times of these mandated opportunities will be set by each high school. • These will be held during May.

  19. Circle the Middle School & High School Student’s Name – Print the full name (first, middle, last) of your student. ID# - Use the ID number that your student uses in the cafeteria. Fill out the rest of the information completely. We are asking for several phone numbers in case we need to contact you regarding any scheduling issues that may arise.

  21. ENGLISH COURSE In order to graduate, students must complete four (4) units of English/Language Arts. As shown already on the BRIDGE Bill Graduation Plan, the standard progression is 9th Grade Lit/Comp, 10th Grade Lit/Comp, American Lit/Comp, and English Lit/Comp. The Honors/AP track is 9th Lit Honors, 10th Lit Honors, American Lit Honors, & AP Lit. The application process for honors/AP is an online process. Honors and AP applications are reviewed. This course will appear on the course request list that will be available during the March high school opportunity. If your student is served through the ESOL program, your student may be assigned the ESOL version of 9th Lit/Comp. Please note that 9th Lit/Comp has a state-required EOCT.

  22. MATH COURSE In order to graduate, students must complete four (4) units of Mathematics. As indicated on the BRIDGE Bill graduation plan the standard progression is Math I, Math II, Math III, and Math IV. The Accelerated path is Acc. Math I, Acc. Math II, Acc. Math III, and AP Calculus. (Follow asterisks to the bottom of the other side of page.) The application process for honors/AP is an online process. Honors and AP applications are reviewed. This course will appear on the course request list that will be available during the March high school opportunity. Some students may be designated to take Math Support. If your student needs this course but does not sign up for it, one of their other classes will be dropped to fit it into their schedule. Please note that Math I has a state-required EOCT.

  23. SCIENCE COURSE In order to graduate, students must complete four (4) units of Science. Again, as already indicated on the BRIDGE Bill plan, the standard progression for science is not as concrete as the other subjects. The typical order, however, is biology (9th), chemistry or environmental science (10th), chemistry or physics/physical science (11th), and a fourth year of science selected from available courses. The Honors format is available in most science courses. Additionally, students should have the option to take AP science courses in 11th or 12th grade. Like English and math, the application process for honors/AP is an online process. Honors and AP applications are reviewed. This course will appear on the course request list that will be available during the March high school opportunity. Please note that biology has a state-required EOCT.

  24. SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE In order to graduate, students must complete three (3) units of S.S. Geography does not count as one of the required three units, but PCSD has most of its 9th graders take this course because of the heavy emphasis of geography on the Social Studies section of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests. The standard progression for social studies is geography (9th – as an elective), world history (10th), U.S. history (11th), and government & economics (12th). The Honors format is available in World Geography. AP Human Geography is the only AP course available to 9th graders at some high schools. AP versions are available for most social studies courses as your student moves into the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years. Once again, the application process for honors/AP is an online process.

  25. HEALTH & Personal Fitness COURSES In order to graduate, students must complete one (1) unit of health and physical education (each is worth ½ unit). Students will participate in the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program as part of their health course. Students who successfully complete the test given at the end of this program will receive an ADAP card. Teenagers wishing to receive a driver’s license must have an ADAP card.

  26. HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS If you look at the left portion of your course request form, you will find the section titled “High School Diploma Requirements”. These requirements began with the Class of 2012 and are the same for Class of 2014 students. We will refer to this section as we complete the registration form. If a student plans to attend a college/university, they must complete two units of the same World (Foreign) language.   29. WORLD (FOREIGN) LANGUAGE COURSE Students who wish to gain admission to a college/university must complete two (2) units of the same World (foreign) language. If your student completed the 7th/8th grades Spanish program in middle school, they should register for Spanish II for 9th grade. If they change to French, they must take two years (two units) of French during grades 9-12. Students who did not take Spanish in middle school can start Spanish I or French I in 9th grade.

  31. Career Clusters and Pathways Career Clusters and their Pathways are part of a state supported curriculum that encourages and supports students and families in their educational and career planning through long-term goals, knowledge, experience and resources.

Career Clusters and Pathways There are 11 Career Clusters of courses taught in the Paulding County School District Career Pathways-Students may earn 3 units of credit in a sequence of CTAE courses in a pathway. These self-selected pathways lead to college readiness and a career readiness certificate. There is a career pathway assessment given at the end of the 3 sequential career pathway courses (usually in the Junior or Senior year).

BRIDGE Bill Mandated Advisement Requirements for Middle School • The following BRIDGE Bill advisement tasks are required to be completed in middle school on the student’s My411, GACollege411 account: • Grade 6 • My411 Account must be set up • Career Cluster Inventory must be completed. • Grade 7 • Interest Profiler Inventory must be completed. • 3 Career Concentrations/Clusters must be explored. • Grade 8 • 3 Occupations and Occupational Information saved on these in the student’s portfolio. • Individual Graduation Plan updated in the High School Plan in My411

Career Portfolios Your middle school student has been working on his/her career portfolio using: www.GACollege411.org These tools, which are an essential part of your student’s career portfolio, are used throughout high school as well to help students identify their goals, strengths and a sense of “Who I am.” and “Where I am going.”

  45. BRIDGE Bill Graduation Plan • Please complete the name section and record 2012 the 9th grade start year section • 2012 is for the 2011-2012 school year

  46. This will be an ongoing record for you and your student to keep track of the credits earned during the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade years. During 12th Grade a final advisement opportunity does include the Senior Letter, which lists all requirements for each individual student to graduate. Section 1 Diploma Requirements

Then, your student will update in www.gacollege411.org on your students My411 Program of Study (BRIDGE Bill Mandate).
