  1. Take Cornell Notes!Mood: Mood is how the literature makes you, the reader, feel.

  2. What else is mood? Mood is the overall emotion created by a work of literature. It can also be described as the atmosphere the writer creates.

  3. Mood Mood can usually be described with one or two adjectives such as bittersweet, playful, or scary.

  4. How do you identify a mood? To find the mood of a piece of literature look at the author’s choice of words, or diction. • Does the author use words that are sad? If so, then the mood is a sad mood. • Does the author use words that are fearful? If so, then the mood is a scary mood.

  5. Example “The funeral procession dragged through the park during the cold afternoon as tears of sorrow flowed freely from the young mother.” • The words in red above describe sadness; therefore, the mood is sad and melancholy.

  6. Example “Thomas turned toward the horrible noise in his closet. The darkness in his room choked his courage away as he heard the squeals of pain become screams of torment.” • The words in red above are describe fear; therefore, this passage has a scary, horrifying mood.
