  2. OVERVIEW • First census in 1911 • From 1985 onwards, census conducted every five years. • Last conducted in 2006- 21st -28th March. • Shift to ten year census – 2016

  3. TOPICS DETERMINATION • Topics are first determined within the Statistics Department based on the previous Census questionnaire • Design the Census questionnaire with the topics identified with alarming issues to be addressed from Census • Data user’s workshop

  4. DATA USER’S WORKSHOP • Data user’s workshop held to: • Discuss the data collected from previous censuses have met their requirement. • Additional requirements and issues identified • Incorporate additional topics/ questions

EXAMPLE • DISABILITY • For the first time Disability was identified as an important area to be covered in 2000 Census. • Unreliability in the data collected – due to sensitivity and the way questions were designed. • This was taken up at the Data user’s workshop held in 2006: • Decision taken – TO EXCLUDE • Decision taken to include disability in the next round of Census

TOPICS COVERED IN 2006 CENSUS • HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION • Type of residential • Number of rooms • Type of material used for roofing • Type of lightning • Electricity provider • Sanitation system • Rent • Household ownership • Waste disposal • Type of drinking water / water for cooking • Fuel used for cooking • Consumer durables

  7. TOPICS COVERED IN 2006 CENSUS------- CONTD • BASIC INDIVIDUAL INFORMATION • Age, sex, nationality • Relationship to head of HH • Living arrangement (under 18 and 65+) • Migration • Education • Employment • Fertility • Marital Status

  9. CHALLENGES AHEAD • Introduce new topics according to international standards • Shift towards Register Based Census- • Need to identify relevant topics and tabulations (with the available data) • Use of new technologies (ecensus, CATI, mobile technology)
