Black & White stripes • Zebras have black and white stripes all over their bodies. Each stripe is unique. • These stripes confuse their predators and makes it difficult to make them out from each other in a group. • Their stripy shiny coats also prevent them from overheating in the open plains of Africa.
Predators • Their jaws are long and thin and their eyes are on the side of their heads so they can see if predators are coming. • Zebras stick together in a herd. They must be wary of lions and hyenas. • If a zebra is attacked, the whole herd will try to defend it.
Some facts about zebra • The zebra has a very powerful kick and will use this to defend themselves against predators. • They eat leaves, bark, buds, fruit and grass. • Just like horses- the male is called a stallion, female is called a mare & young is called a foal. • A group of zebra are called a herd.
Noises and eyesight • They have sharp front teeth for grazing and dull back teeth for grinding and pulling. • The noises they make include braying, barking & snorting. • Their night time vision is said to be as good as that of an owl.
Zebra or a horse? • It is not possible to ride a zebra as they have a flat back. • The horse has a curved back and so it is easier to ride a horse.
