Psalm 17: A Lament from David Psalm 17:1,2 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! 2 From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right!
David’s Self Perspective Psalm 17:3-6 You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. 4 With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. 5 My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. 6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words
David’s Lament Psalm 17:7-9 Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,9 from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me.
Psalm 17:10-12 They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly.11 They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.12 He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.
Psalm 17:13,14 Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, 14 from men by your hand, O Lord, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants.
David Closes Psalm 17:15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Consider… David was a… Liar Adulterer Murderer Idolater
Two Questions How does the lament of a lying, adulterous and idolatrous murderer end up in the Word of God? How can a person who was a liar, an adulterer, an idolater and a murderer be called by God “a man after my own heart” who will “do God’s will”?
Scripture Prescriptive Text --- describes what it is that we should do, think and how we are to view reality Descriptive Text --- describes the fallen perspectives of individuals in real life situations
Was David… A liar, an adulterer, an idolater and a murderer, or … was he a man who was forgiven, redeemed by Christ, existing in the righteousness of Christ who lied, committed adultery, idolatry and murder?
Changing the Question NOT: How can a person who was a liar, an adulterer, an idolater and a murderer be called by God “a man after my own heart” who will “do God’s will”? Rather: How can a person who has lied, committed adultery, idolatry and murder be called by God “a man after my own heart” who will “do God’s will”?
Psalm 17 How does Psalm 17 declare the Glory of God? How does Psalm 17 move our hearts to praise God?
Humility Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
David’s Humility 1 Chronicles 29:10-16 Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. 11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 13 And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name. 14 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. 16 O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.
