Examples of Descriptive Statistics • Only 2 in 5 college students graduate in four years. • University of South Carolina loses 9%-10% of students in or just after their second year.
INFERENTIAL STATISTICS • Using the data to draw conclusions and make predictions on the basis of a sample.
Example of Inferential Statistics • One study has estimated more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related in some way to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents. • In a report published in the journal Health Affairs in January, if every hospital in the USA were able to achieve the same level of performance as the top 25%, nearly 10,000 lives could be saved each year.
Descriptive vs. Inferential For the following situations determine if the given information is DESCRIPTIVE or INFERENTIAL : • Enrollment in private elementary and secondary schools is projected to increase 7 percent between 2001 and 2013. • In 2003, 3,657 drivers 15 to 20 years old were killed, and an additional 308,000 were injured from motor vehicle accidents.
