CAN I AFFORD TO BE A PRE-NURSING MAJOR? What are the monetary, time, and stress costs of pursing a career in nursing?
STEP ONE: DETERMINING IF YOU CAN FINANCIALLY AFFORD TO PURSUE A NURSING CAREER Develop an education plan – the average student needs 10-12 terms (4-5 years) to complete a nursing program Start with planning all preparatory coursework and program pre-requisites Remember: most science course are pre-requisites and can only be taken 1 per term After completing the pre-requisites and submitting and being accepted into the nursing program plan on 4-5 terms before your class begins. The Actual nursing classes and clinicals take 5 terms to complete
STEP TWO: CREATE A FINANCIAL PLAN Track your actual spending (to the penny) for 2 weeks Determine your actual hard income (salary, savings etc.) Determine assistance money (PELL, scholarships and loans) Create a spending plan based on income and spending habits REMEMBER:to balance income and spending you only have 2 choices. Increase income Decrease expenses (spending)
BUDGET KILLERS W, I, F GRADES COST MONEY – not only paying for tuition multiple times but it could extend your time to degree as well (longer before you get that nurse’s paycheck) If you are utilizing educational loans remember they are for education assistance not to cover your living expenses. You have between 10-15 terms loans add up fast! Once in the nursing program it is a full-time day program and the recommendation is to not work more than 20 hours per week There are many additional costs in being a nursing major (insurance, vaccines, equipment, study aids, uniforms, transportation to clinical etc..)
ONLY 24 HOURS IN A DAY! It is recommended Part-Students plan 30-40 hours for educational success. Full-Time students plan on 40-50 hours for educational success. Once a student begins clinicals even more time may be needed. Family commitments – spouse and children can make some adjustments but you still are a parent and a spouse. Life commitments such as community, church, extended family, personal and healthy lifestyle need time as well. 7-8 hours of sleep is needed for success Me Time!!
STRESS FACTORS Academic Success - Fear of Failure Time - Never Enough Length of Time - Out of Work-Force or at Part-Time Money – Money – Money Blood – Mucus – Illness – Death Children – Spouse – Parents – Extended Family
