PROJECT • I WAS WONDERING HOW ENZYMES WORK,SO I DECIDED TO DO A PROJECT.MY PROJECT WAS TO MAKE TWO CUPS OF GELATIN.THEN, PUT A SLICE OF PINEAPPLE ON ONE OF THEM. LASTLY, SEE WHAT HAPPENS OVER AN HOURS TIME.
PRE-RESEARCH • BEFORE I DID MY PROJECT, I FORMED A HYPOTHESIS. • HYPOTHESIS-THE PINEAPPLE WILL LIQUIFY THE GELATIN.
RESEARCH • Enzymes are amino acids or proteins that start chemical reactions. They are in all living things. This is one of the reasons we should chew our foods well before swallowing, the enzymes in our saliva help to pre-digest it which in turn helps our systems stay healthy. Enzymes are very picky when it comes to what it reacts to. Only certain enzymes can break down certain compounds. Inside the human body, the liver and red blood cells have an enzyme called catalase which can break down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. • At a very efficient rate as well, one catalase enzyme molecule can convert five million hydrogen peroxide molecules in one minute. Clearly knowing how do enzymes work are necessary to make the body function—since just eating or breathing requires enzymes to break down raw materials we consume. • A sustainable environment would not be possible without the benefits of enzymes. They break down and help decompose all raw materials so that they can be recycled by nature. Thus, making it more cost-effective for businesses to use in production, because enzymes save energy and prevent pollution.
Research • Raw honey is one of the world’s super health foods. It contains all of the B-complex vitamins, protein-building amino acids, and vitamins C, D, and E. It also contains ample amounts of plant pigments, proteins, and healthy acids like citric acid. • Along with simple sugars like glucose that go directly into the bloodstream, raw honey also has the benefits of enzymes like diastase, inulase, and invertase to aid digestion and the assimilation of vitamins and minerals into the body’s cells which is why the benefits of eating honey are so important for us. • All of these things make raw honey a great blood builder when used regularly. The combination of all of enzymes, acids, and vitamins contained in raw honey soothes the entire digestive system, absorbs easily, and keeps out bacteria. Honey also keeps the body regular which can help to ease IBS Symptoms because of its lubricating abilities.
Research • Enzymes work in a way that makes substrates (a molecule to be broken down), fit into it. The part where the substrates are bound to enzymes is called the active site. When the binding occurs in the active site, it creates an enzyme-substrate complex. From there, the compound is broken down and turned into something else before it is released by the enzyme.
My Work • I fixed two see-through cups of gelatin and let them set. Then, I took them out. I put a slice of pineapple on one. I took pictures, and waited an hour. After an hour, the gelatin liquefied on the top, and was softer.
