Mass Production What is it? • The production of large amounts of standardized products, including and especially on assembly lines • The assembly line revolutionized the auto industry with new technology and techniques that increased manufacturing efficiently.
First automobile to be mass produced • A car many moderate-income families could afford • $850 in 1909 but later fell to $260 in 1920 • Invented by Henry Ford Model-T

Effects of the Automobile Economic Social • Accelerated the outward expansion of population into the suburbs • People could live on the outskirts of the city and be able to work in the city by commuting • New jobs such as fast food, city/highway construction, state patrol/police, convenience stores, gas stations, auto repair shops, auto shops, etc. allow more employment for the world's growing population • Different traditions than before the automobile was invented • Teenagers gained more independence with driving freedom-escape adult supervision • Dating • Mobile society, more families could afford it
