What is a single replacement reaction? • Single replacement reaction: Atoms of an element replace the atoms of a second element in a compound.
Activity series of metals: A list of metals in order of decreasing reactivity. A reactive metal will replace any metal listed BELOW it in the chart It’s on the back of your periodic table!
ANSWER THE QUESTION Magnesium can not replace which of the following metals? A. Zinc B. Mercury C. Calcium D.Iron
True or false? Potassium can replace sodium, zinc, and mercury? TRUE Lead can replace lithium? FALSE
Single replacement reactions with non-metals • A non-metal can also replace another non-metal from a compound. Replacement is usually limited to halogens. Their activity decreases as you move down the column. IT’S JUST LIKE THE CHART OF METALS. SAME CONCEPT!
True or false • Bromine can replace Iodine and Chlorine? FALSE • Fluorine can replace Chlorine and Astatine? TRUE
Examples Answers will be skeleton equations • Mg(s)+LiNO3(aq) No reaction • Zn + CuCl2 ZnCl2 + Cu • Cl2+ NaBr NaCl + Br2
Homework! • Mg(s)+Zn(NO3)2(aq)? For more on single replacement reactions visit this site! http://www.chemtutor.com/react.htm
FUN facts • In galvanized steel, when the steel starts to corrode after the coating has been scratched, the zinc in the coating will undergo a single replacement reaction with the steel, forming zinc ions and iron atoms. Rust would be converted back to iron, in other words.Another example occurred in the Statue of Liberty. The outer layers of the statue are made of copper, but the inner support was made of steel. When the copper started to react with air, forming a verdigris coating, a single replacement reaction caused the iron to convert the copper back to copper metal; the iron started to rust, and the entire inner support had to be replaced in the 1980s. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090221115503AAwRqJj Facts found from here
