Overview When I ask small to medium size business owners about their backup strategies they usually reply that they are backing up their data either to some sort of external hard drive on site or they use a company like Mozy or Carbonite to backup to the Cloud. I congratulate them for actually having some sort of backup plan and then ask: • How often they test their backups • How long it takes to restore their data from backup • How long it would take to replace or rebuild a server • How they continue to run their business during a server outage Now it starts to get a bit fuzzy. Overview continued Since this presentation is targeted toward business owners and stakeholders, my goal is to show from a business perspective why traditional backup strategies are simply not adequate to ensure your company stays up and running in today’s fast paced business environments. 2 Key Metrics: RTO and RPO RTO – Recovery Time Objective • This objective is a measurement of how long can you be without that server. Put another way, how much time from when the server goes offline to when that server is fully operational is acceptable from a business perspective . • This is typically measured in minutes, hours and days. 2 Key Metrics: RTO and RPO RPO – Recovery Point Objective • This objective is a measurement of how much data is acceptable to lose or have to re-create. • Typically this is the data that has been entered or modified since the last backup and when the asset became unavailable. • Often, this is last night’s backup. Traditional Remediation Steps Cont. • Re-Install Backup Application or Agent • Patch Backup Application to latest release • Restore Data using Backup Application • Time Cost = Depends on: • Whether there is a local copy of the data or it resides in the cloud only. • Amount of data to restore • Executive Summary – Most likely you will be unable to use the failed server for at least 1 day, realistically 2 or more days. Traditional Data Backups You do nightly backups at 1:00 am. Your business opens at 8:00 am and your server crashes at 2:30 pm on a Monday. (Are you able to continue doing business using paper or other methods? ) Your server is replaced and online Tuesday at 6:30 pm with data restored from the Monday 1:00 am backup. Are you able to recover the data lost from Monday 8:00am to 2:30pm that wasn’t in the last backup from paper or other records? What are the costs associated with manually re-entering/recreating thatdata as well as re-entering everything from when the server went down till it came back on line? When needed, the Siris device mounts and boots this VM. This VM becomes the temporary production server. • This VM is a fully functional, running clone of your server, allowing you to continue working until your physical server is repaired/replaced.
