Researchers & Stakeholders in Meaningful Conversations R&D in agriculture Two arenas • Plant Protection • DIAS Flakkebjerg • Farming Systems • DIAS Foulum • Desired outcome: • Improved learning networks for better local R&D • Recognition of issues that needs adressing • Set up research agenda at European level Evolving new R&D project 11 participating stakeholders in workshop event: Researchers (3) Extension (1) Farmers (2) Regional Government (3) National Government (1) NGOs (1) Established R&D project (1987) 10 participating stakeholders in workshop event: Researchers (2) Extension (5) Farmers (1) National Government (1) Industry (1) Major Findings • LEARNing researchers took the stance of interested, aware, but not involved facilitators. Major tool used for facilitation was question-posing • The Flakkebjerg experience was used to improve the Foulum approach • All differences between the two events could not be attributed to a change in approach. Better process outcomes were achieved when stakeholders in group were not known to each other • Familiarity among participants seem to imply fewer divergent views Next Step Round Table with 19 stakeholders rethinking ways of organising research for the future of agriculture in the context of rural development in Denmark Not usual practice that stakeholders come together in agricultural R&D When they do, the group does not seem to extend beyond researchers, extension and a few farmers There is willingness to see beyond ’usual’ partnerships Existing barriers are hindering the establishment of multiple stakeholder networks
