I-95 O-D Survey Overview • To Understand Drivers and Their Trips: • How long do they drive on I-95? • Where they come from and where they go to? • Awareness of Transit Alternative • Degree of interest on Transit ? • Like the High Occupancy Toll (HOT) concept? • Data Collected at Every I-95 Exit in Broward and Palm Beach counties • 3 AM Peak Hours & 3 PM Peak Hours
Survey Instrument • 32 questions asked • English and Spanish versions • Responses could be mailed back using prepaid postage as well as online
Survey Response • 83,000 distributed along I-95 • Additional questionnaires distributed to 22 public agencies • 12,380 usable surveys returned • 11,441 from field survey [14% response rate] • 939 from agency survey
Trip Length Distribution Average Trip Length on I-95 = 13.3 Miles
Trip Length Distribution[Only Work Trips] Average Trip Length on I-95 = 12.9 Miles
Other Major Facilities Used • 84% of respondents used only I-95
Other findings • 30% could have used the Turnpike but chose to use I-95 to avoid tolls • 79% driving alone • 2.9% own Hybrid Vehicles • 24.5% was thinking about purchasing or leasing hybrid Vehicles
Agency Respondents: Interest in HOT Lanes Around 3% of respondents did not respond
Summary of Key Observations • Long distance Trips: Average 13.3 miles on the freeway segment alone versus the Average of 6.9 miles found on the 1995 Broward Household Survey • High Percentages of trip begin and/or end near by I-95 • Currently, transit is not the alternative for 2/3 of I-95 Motorists • About 1/3 of I-95 Motorists would consider using HOT Lanes
