The History of Babylon Babylon was a city-state located in the ancient Babylonian Empire. Babylon was also the capital of the empire. The city was well known for it’s luxurious atmosphere, yet strong corruption. The Jews were exiled to Babylon from 597 to 538 BC, as part of the Old Testament’s prophecy. During the exile, the prophet Daniel became one of the greatest advisors to the King of Babylon and interpreted the infamous “handwriting on the wall.” In the Bible, it is written that Babylon fell as a part of God’s plan to punish the world. (Isaiah 13:11)
Modern Usage of Babylon’s Image • Today, Babylon is used as an allusion to a place that is alluring yet corruptive and sinful. • (Pictured is one of Babylon’s goddesses, Ishtar, who patrons love, war, and sex – three of the things Babylon is most commonly remembered for.)
The wild party she threw seemed like a modern version of Babylon; many of the things I saw can’t even be repeated.
Even though she regretted starting her lifestyle, the allure of Babylon drew her to continue her path to destruction.
Coming from a small Midwestern farming community, Jeff felt as if he had arrived in Babylon when he encountered the sights and sounds of nightlife in New York City.
