The Babylonian Empire • The Babylonian empire is surrounded by water including the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea, Red Sea , and Persian Gulf. They also have Rivers flowing through it including Euphrates River and the Tigris River.
Timeline 2050: Babylon is part of a state ruled from the city of Ur. 1894: Babylon becomes an independent city state, under the Amorite king Sumu-abum. 1792-1750: Reign of Hammurabi, who extends the kingdom from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. 1590-625: Babylon was Captured by Kassites, Elamites, Assyrians, Chaldeans. 539: Babylon is sacked by the Persian king “Cyrus 2 the Great”, and becomes a province town in the Persian Empire. It is soon converted into the residence city of the Persian crown prince.
Government • The society was governed by an absolute monarch, the king, who was active in all fields of life, both as a legislator, judge, administrator and warlord. He was directly in charge of governing the system below him, and appointed directly his closest coworkers, the governors.

Military • Early Babylon under Hammurbai conquered the Sumerian Empire and became the dominant city-state…it was then conquered by the Assyrians • A new Babylonian Empire emerged under Nebuchadnezzar in 612 BC…and was later conquered in 539 BC by the Persians
Inventions • In 2000 BC an Underwater tunnel was built under the Euphrates River connecting the Kings Palace with the Kings Temple. • In 1800 BC Positional Notation was invented. This is an early form of longitude and latitude based on 60’s. This also improved the writing of numbers. • In 1750 BC formal medicine was invented. This was formalization of its study and practice. • The Code of Hammurabi, which was the world’s first written law code…similar to the 10 Commandments, most of the punishments for breaking the laws was death • Nebuchadnezzar built for his wife the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (as seen on the first slide)
Religion • We know the most about Babylonian religion, The Babylonians preferred Baal-Marduk as their God. • Babylonian religion was a continuation of Sumerian religion, with the major change being that their god Marduk was placed on top of the Sumerian pantheon. The older gods of Enki and Enlil remained important gods. • A lot of their religious practices centered around mysticism and sorcery (magic)
