  5. What the politicians say… • "Sandy hit us very hard, it was a storm of historic intensity, but New Yorkers are resilient and we've seen an outpouring of support," the mayor said at a news briefing yesterday. "We have a plan for recovery, and that recovery is already beginning. It's the beginning of a process that we all know will take a while." Mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg

  6. Factors for Resilience: • Close relationships with family and friends • The ability to manage strong feelings and impulses • Good problem-solving and communication skills • Seeking help and resources • Seeing yourself as resilient (rather than as a victim) • Coping with stress in healthy ways and avoiding harmful coping strategies, such as substance abuse • Helping others • Finding positive meaning in your life despite difficult or traumatic events What psychologists say… A person’s ability to recover from or adapt to difficult times. Even in the face of adversity, a person shows signs of positive functioning.

  7. What your brain says (bringing it back to neurotransmitters) • Wait, what? • Quick reminder: what’s a neurotransmitter? • Remember, neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that carry information • Some neurotransmitters are responsible for keeping us resilient • EXAMPLE: The “Resilient Neurotransmitter”- GABA • Tells the brain to be quiet (inhibitory) • Strongly associated with well-being, calmness • Inhibits amygdala activity • Why is this important? • Helps produce endorphins • Why is this important?

  8. Large-Scale Resilience: A person goes for 10 days without power, hot water, AND worries about a house down the shore A person feels stressed and overwhelmed by their situation A resilient person’s brain continues to produce GABA and allows them to positively function in the world Small-Scale Resilience: A person hears the howling wind A person starts to get stressed/scared A resilient person’s neurons release GABA for a calming effect in the brain Sandy, GABA, and Resilience
