Standard 11-A Classify animals according to type of skeletal structure and method of fertilization and reproduction body symmetry, body coverings, and location. PowerPoint by: Quenton Mercedes
The eligible content Compare invertebrates to vertebrates. Compare endoskeletons to exoskeletons Compare internal to external fertilization. Compare sexual to asexual reproduction. Compare bilateral to radial symmetry.
Vertebrates are animals with backbones (shown in the last slide) these include: fish, mammals, amphibians, birds, and reptiles Invertebrates are animals without backbones these animals include insects and mollusks. Vertebrates and Invertebrates
What is an endoskeleton? • An endoskeleton is an internal supporting system skeleton derived from the mesoderm that is a characteristic of vertebrates and some invertebrates. • Animals that are included mammals and other animals that have similarities to vertebrates.
What is an exoskeleton? • Any animal whose skeleton is not internal and that provides protection from the outer layer of their body. • These animals include: insects, crustaceans, and sea stars.
Internal fertilization is the fertilization of the egg inside the female External fertilization is the process involved the union of a male and female organism in which sex cells outside the female are used to fertilize an egg. An example of this would be a male and a female human. What is internal and external fertilization?
Asexual reproduction is when an organism has only parent; when part of a parent splits off to from another organism. Sexual reproduction- the cells 2 different parents unite to form the new organism. (Not meaning that the parents have sex ) What is asexual & sexual reproduction?
Bilateral symmetry symmetrical arrangement of an organism or a body part along a central axis and is divided equally. Radial symmetry- symmetrical arrangement of constituents epically of radiating parts about a central point Bilateral and radial symmetry
Which characteristic are used to determine the classification of a sea star? • Radial symmetry and an exoskeleton • Radial symmetry and an endoskeleton • Bilateral symmetry and an exoskeleton • Bilateral radial symmetry and an endoskeleton
The answer is ……. A. Radial symmetry and exoskeleton, because it has a hard outer structure and radiating parts
A new organism is discovered after careful observation scientists conclude that it is a mammal. Which 2 characteristics would the organism possess? • Endoskeleton and scales • Exoskeleton and asymmetry • Fur or hair & warm- blooded • Have live young and radial symmetry
The answer is…. C. Fur or hair and warm blooded, mammals have hair to protect them from predators and to keep the warm during the cold times.
Study the table below. Which organism is MOST LIKELY to a clam?
And the answer is...... • Organism 2- because it has a shell which is exoskeleton it has gills which allows it to live in the water.
Which animal ‘s body shape show bilateral symmetry? • A. Jellyfish • B. sea anemone • C. fish • D. sea anemone
And the answer is ….. • C- fish because when you cut the fish down the middle the sides are equal.
Which group of animals contains members that move using cilia and flagella? • A. birds • B. protists • C. mammals • D. amphibians
And the answer is ….. • B- protists because cilia is a hair like product and a flagella has a whip- like tail and protists contains all of these things
Which animal has internal fertilization? • A. human • B. shark • C. snakes • D. whales
And the answer is….. • C. snakes because they hatch eggs to give birth to their offspring
Which sea animal has radial symmetry? • A. cnidarians • B. Lobsters • C. whale • D. anemones
And the answer … • A. because when you cut them in half they are not equally proportionate
Which animal is a vertebrate? • A. Reptile • B. clam • C. scallop
And the answer is …. • A. reptile because it has an internal backbone
Which animal has an exoskeleton? • A. bony fish • B. crustacean • C. reptile • D. birds
And the answer is….. • B. crustacean because it has an hard outer structure
Which animal doesn’t have external fertilization? • A. nocturnal owls • B. humans • C. sharks • D. whales
And the answer is… • A. owls because it gives birth to an egg
Which animal has asexual reproduction? • A. parasite • B. human • C. bat
And the answer is …. • A. parasite because it is formed from its parent.
Which of the following means internal supporting system (skeleton)? • A. external fertilization • B. bilateral symmetry • C. radial symmetry • D. endoskeleton
And the answer is… • D. endoskeleton because the skeleton is found on the inside of the organism
Does and arachnid have bilateral symmetry? • A. yes • B. no
And the answer is… • Yes because it can be divided equally.
Does a human have internal fertilization? • A. yes • B. no
And the answer is …. • No because we produce sexually not asexually
What is an invertebrate? • A. bird • B. human • C. dog • D. clam
And the answer is… • D. clam because it does not have a backbone or a spinal column
