Mock interview #1-main part of interview Interviewer: You’re an English major at Yale. Being a financial analyst requires strong analytical skills, which you don’t appear to have. Zhi: While it’s true that I haven’t developed analytical skills through my English courses, I have done so through my coursework at Yale’s School of Management or SOM. Interviewer: Really? How? Zhi: In two ways. First, I completed a yearlong course at SOM on financial analysis. And second, I and three SOM students worked on a special Yale task force that involved analyzing the costs related to building the new SOM building.
Mock interview #1-main part of interview Interviewer: What specifically did you and your classmates do? Zhi: Overall, we needed to control costs while ensuring that SOM’s new building would be state of the art. Therefore, we: • Collected and analyzed the costs related to similar projects across the U.S. • Determined how to control SOM costs through improved competitive bidding and other means • Made recommendations to SOM management Interviewer: Oh, so you have some experience with financial analysis. But, our analysts also need to be able to write clear and concise reports.
Mock interview #1-main part of interview Zhi: And that’s where my English major helps me tremendously. My SOM classmates relied on me to draft our report and also make the final revisions. Interviewer: Long-term, do you really want to use your English major to build a financial career? Zhi: Given my dual background, I think that I could be highly effective. Interviewer: Oh, I almost forgot. I have another interview at 11. I think that you’re a competitive candidate. We’ll be getting back to you soon.
Mock interview #1-main part of interview Zhi: I appreciate your comment, Barbara. If I don’t hear from you by the end of November, may I follow up with you by email or phone? Interviewer: You won’t have to. We’ll be meeting to discuss all the candidates this Friday, and I’ll get back to everyone by the end of next week. Zhi: Thanks, Barbara. I enjoyed speaking with you and look forward to hearing from you.
