What is a PC? Merriam Webster defines a personal computer as: • A general-purpose computer equipped with a microprocessor and designed to run especially commercial software (as a word processor or Internet browser) for an individual user
History - Before PC’s • Mainframes • Very Large and expensive • Corporations, Government, and Universities • Jobs prepared on punch cards • Could take hours or days to get job results • Minicomputers • Early 60’s • Still large and fairly expensive • Much more convenient
History - The Microprocessor • Combined arithmetic, logic, and control functions into one integrated circuit • Costs and size dropped dramatically • First invented: • Texas Instruments TMS 1000 • September 17, 1971 • First commercially available: • Intel 4004 • November 15, 1971
