Challenges Ahead in education • Mission to achieve universal quality education by the year 2015. • Projected enrolment of 45 million students (2015) • Shortage of teachers – properly qualified/ good quality teachers • Substantial number of rural students travel 70 to 1000 km for Higher Education.

HE Challenges & Opportunities • Forecast of 120 million students in HE world over by 2020: 100 million crossed and 120 million by 2010 • China: 10 million t0 21 million (2000-2003) • Malaysia: 166% growth by 2012 • Age participation rate (APR) • APR for Developed Countries around 50% • Less than 10% APRT for India with 60 million below 25 years of age • Scenario for raising APR t0 40%
