It’s ELECTRIC!!!! By Jenny Mizrahi, Nury Rodriguez, & Amy Tatasciore
MST Inquiry UnitIntroduction • This is an MST inquiry unit model, for the lessons have a link between math, science and technology. • Incorporate Bloom’s taxonomy, Gardner’s multiple intelligences. • Adhere to the mandated mathematics, science, technology, and ELA standards. • It contains a Filamentality Web Page, and a MyEnectricalEnergywiki.
Introduction (Continued) Lessons: • How electricity travels. • How energy can be transferred from one place to another • How interactions with forms of energy can be helpful or harmful.
Lesson 1- Types of Circuits • Web Resource- www.learningcircuits.co.uk
Lesson 3- Static Energy • Students will complete an activity where they will test out different objects to see which objects create static • Different materials they will use to test: • Balloon against person’s hair, paper, and Styrofoam • Carpet/rug and piece of metal (ie. Door knob)
Now That’s Static!! • The following is what the students’ findings (bar graph) should look like based on the class activity:
What are the uses of Electricity? Home & School Uses of Electricity:
How to calculate Kilowatt-Hour Usage? How much electricity we use in the classroom? Some Electrical Devices in our Classroom: What is a Kilowatt? Watts /1000 = (kW) Kilowatts (kW) x Hours of Use = kilowatt Hours (kWh) Kilowatts Hours (kWh) x $0.093(Rate) = Cost of Usage
What is a Kilowatt-Hour? How much coal is needed to produce 1 kilowatt-Hour of electricity? Answer: 1 pound of coal Where do you think this energy is generated from? What is the kilowatt-Hour usage for three electrical devices in my classroom? kWh usage = 5.019 A classroom in the United State on average uses? Answer: one Kilowatt-hour of electricity
What are non-renewable energy sources? What are renewable energy sources? renewable energy sources such as solar and wind can be replenished naturally in a short period of time. • Non-renewable if they cannot be replenished (made again) in a short period of time.
Energy Sources Non-Renewable Sources Renewable sources Oil Geothermal Coal Biomass Gas Solar Wind Hydropower
Are you a Energeneous?Scavenger Hunt: Renewable & Non- Renewable Energy Sources • What are non-renewable energy sources? • What are the five renewable energy sources? • What are the uses of electricity? How the electric energy used is measured? Why it is important to save (conserve) energy? How can you save energy? Where does electricity come from? Use the Filamentality Web Page hyperlinks to find the answers to the following Scavenger Hunt questions. http://www.depweb.state.pa.us/justforkids/cwp/view.asp?q=472545 http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=2 http://www.kids.esdb.bg/basic.html http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=us_energy_homes-basics http://www.eere.energy.gov/kids/renergy.html http://www.iptv.org/exploremore/energy/profiles/fossil_fuels.cfm http://www.solar-is-future.com/kids/pdf/at_home.pdf http://www.mercury.co.nz/education/education_whatisenergy_wheredoeselectricitycomefrom.p
