  1. THE DEATH OF CHRIST Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. [By Ron Halbrook]

  2. The Death of Christ Introduction: • Momentous event recorded • Matt. 27:45-50 • Mk. 15:37 • Lk. 23:39-46 • Jn. 19:28-30

  3. Matt. 27:45-50 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

  4. Mk. 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

  5. Lk. 23:39-46 39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. 40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

  6. Lk. 23:39-46 44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

  7. Jn. 19:28-30 28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

  8. The Death of Christ Introduction: • Momentous event recorded • Matt. 27:45-50 • Mk. 15:37 • Lk. 23:39-46 • Jn. 19:28-30 2. The death of Christ is the basis of our salvation—as understand it better, we will be more thankful & committed!

  9. The Death of Christ I. Actual, Factual, Historical Event A. Jewish Leaders Affirmed He Died (Matt. 27:62-63) 62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

  10. The Death of Christ I. Actual, Factual, Historical Event B. Roman Leaders Affirmed He Died (Mk. 15:44-45) 44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. 45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

  11. The Death of Christ I. Actual, Factual, Historical Event C. His Disciples Affirmed He Died (Lk. 23:50-55)

  12. Lk. 23:50-55 50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just: 51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. 53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

  13. Lk. 23:50-55 54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. 55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

  14. The Death of Christ I. Actual, Factual, Historical Event D. Our Salvation Based on the Reality of This Event (1 Pet. 3:18) For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

  15. The Death of Christ II. Prophesied A. David Clearly Prophesied His Death (Ps. 22:15-16) 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

  16. The Death of Christ II. Prophesied B. Isaiah Clearly Prophesied His Death (Isa. 53:8-10)

  17. Isa. 53:8-10 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

  18. The Death of Christ II. Prophesied C. Jesus Clearly Prophesied His Own Death (Matt. 20:18-19) 18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

  19. The Death of Christ II. Prophesied D. Jesus Prophesied His Death as the Basis of Our Salvation (Jn. 3:14-15; 12:32-33)

  20. D. Jesus Prophesied His Death as the Basis of Our Salvation (Jn. 3:14-15; 12:32-33) 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

  21. The Death of Christ III. Voluntary A. Isaiah Said He Would Die for Us Without Protest (Isa. 53:7) He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

  22. The Death of Christ III. Voluntary B. Christ Had Power Over His Life & Died Willingly (Jn. 10:17-18) 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

  23. The Death of Christ III. Voluntary C. Christ Gave Up the Glories of Heaven to Die for Us (Phil. 2:5-8)

  24. C. Christ Gave Up the Glories of Heaven to Die for Us (Phil. 2:5-8) 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

  25. The Death of Christ IV. Universal Provision A. Christ Came to Offer the Bread of Life to All Men (Jn. 6:51) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

  26. The Death of Christ IV. Universal Provision B. God Wants All to be Saved, Christ Died for All (1 Tim. 2:3-6) 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

  27. The Death of Christ V. Vicarious: For Others, Undeserved A. He Came to Die for Stubborn, Straying, Sinful Sheep (Isa. 53:4-7, 11)

  28. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

  29. A. He Came to Die for Stubborn, Straying, Sinful Sheep (Isa. 53:4-7, 11) 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

  30. The Death of Christ V. Vicarious: For Others, Undeserved B. He Came to Die for Enemies Not Friends (Rom. 5:6-8) 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  31. The Death of Christ V. Vicarious: For Others, Undeserved C. The Holy One Died for the Unholy Ones (1 Pet. 3:18) For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

  32. The Death of Christ VI. Reconciles A. Enemies Are Reconciled to God by the Death of Christ (Rom. 5:10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

  33. The Death of Christ VI. Reconciles B. Our Sins Make Us God’s Enemies, Christ’s Death Makes Us Friends (Col. 1:21-22) 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

  34. The Death of Christ VII. Baptized Into: United With A. Baptized into His Death: Our Sins are Forgiven, Our Lives Must Change (Rom. 6:1-4)

  35. Baptized into His Death: Sins Forgiven, Lives Change (Rom. 6:1-4) 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

  36. The Death of Christ VII. Baptized Into: United With A. Baptized into His Death: Our Sins are Forgiven, Our Lives Must Change (Rom. 6:1-4) • Preach His Death: Preach Baptism • United with Christ & His Death: Receive All Blessings of His Death • Baptism: The Moment of Forgiveness, Death to Guilt & Bondage of Sin • Must No Longer Live in Sin

  37. The Death of Christ Lk. 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
