The twofold nature of the labour process.
E N D
The twofold nature of the labour process Since however the addition of new value to the material of his labour, and the preservation of its former value, are two entirely distinct results, it is plain that this twofold nature of the result can be explained only by the twofold nature of his labour. (p. 307)
The concepts: Constant capital: «That part of capital, therefore, which is turned into means of production, i.e. the raw material, the auxiliary material and the instruments of labor, does not undergo any quantitative alteration of value in the process of production». (p. 317) Variable capital: «That part of capital which is turned into labour-power does undergo an alteration of value in the process of pro-duction. It both reproduces […] its own value and produces an excess, a surplus value, which may itself vary». (p. 317) The same elements of capital which, from the point of view of the labour process, can be distinguished respectively as the objective and subjective factors, as means of production and labour-power, can be distinguished, from the point of view of the valorization process, asconstant and variable capital.
