Family Orientation to the IFSP Process ServiceCoordinators are responsible for providing an orientation on the IFSP process to parents of children eligible for BCW.
Standard Time For a child who is determined eligible for BCW, a meeting to develop the IFSP must be conducted within ___ days of the initial referral. • Choose the correct answer • 30 • 45 • 60 • 90
Timelines for IFSP Review Periodic review • A review of the IFSP must be conducted every 6 months. • A review can be conducted sooner if conditions warrant, or the family requests such review. Annual meeting • A team meeting must be conducted on at least an annual basis to evaluate the IFSP.
Family-Initiated Delays in IFSP Development IFSPs may only be delayed for family-initiated reasons, including: • child or family illness/hospitalization, • delayed family response time, and • family requested delay. Family-initiated reasons for delays must be well documented.
Who attends the IFSP meeting? IFSP meetings and reviews must include: • The parent(s) • The service coordinator • Anyone the family wants to invite • Persons directly involved in conducting evaluations or assessments • Persons who are or will be providing services to the child & family, especially the primary service provider (PSP) It is also helpful to include others who can contribute information on the design, development, and implementation of the IFSP for the child & family.
IFSP Meeting Arrangements • Parents mustbe provided written notice of any IFSP meeting. • Other IFSP team members should also be notified reasonably in advance to allow for participation. • IFSP team members may participate in person or by electronic means that allow “real time” interaction with the team.
Language / Communication Mode IFSP meetings must be conducted in the native language or other communication mode (e.g., sign language) of the parent(s) Written documentation of efforts to locate interpreter services for the family must be maintained in the child's BCW early intervention record
Team Responsibility In providing services to families, it is the entire team’s responsibility to ensure that information from the sections of the IFSP document are reflected in the development, review and evaluation of the IFSP. Transition Planning The IFSP must include steps and services to support the child’s transition to preschool, early education, Early Head Start, childcare, or other appropriate programs or services.
The IFSP Document & BIBS All BCW team members contributing to the IFSP process should be listed on the IFSP document The parent’s signature on the IFSP document serves as consent for implementation of the services and activities listed The service coordinator enters all IFSP information into the Babies Information and Billing System (BIBS)
Team-Based Performance Checklist All team members receive information about upcoming IFSP meetings The family understands the purpose of the IFSP meeting & document All team members use a “family-centered” philosophy throughout the development and implementation of the IFSP The family is encouraged to share information about their natural environments and typical family routines Functional outcomes are measurable and based on the family’s indicators
Team-Based Performance Checklist Team members, including the family, monitor progress continuously and call for an IFSP review whenever appropriate The service coordinator adheres to timelines for initial IFSP development, periodic review, and annual meetings The IFSP meeting serves to build trust among the team, including the family, primary service provider, and consulting team members
