CHAPTER 4 MANAGING RISK : USING THE IPDE PROCESS
Risks while Driving • Environment: • Sun • Shadows • Snow/ice • Curves • Heavy rain
Risks • Vehicle: • Bald tires • Dirty windshield • Worn wiper blades
Risks • Adjusting radio • Texting • Cell phone • DUI • Angry
Good seeing habits and your ability to manage space in the road are tools for low-risk driving The IPDE Process is an organized system of seeing, thinking, and responding.
Identify Orderly Visual Search Pattern • Look for open and closed zones • Look for specific clues • other users • roadway features and conditions • traffic controls
Zone Control System • Give me some examples of closed zones- • tailgating • parked cars • traffic light • blind spot areas • construction • hazards ahead
Predict PREDICT What should you predict? • actions of others • speed • direction • control
Decide Change Lane position or direction Communicate Change Speed
Minimize the Hazards • If there is only ONE HAZARD • Put more distance between yourself and the hazard
Separate the Hazards • If there are 2 OR MORE HAZARDS handle one hazard at a time. • Adjust speed to deal with one hazard at a time.
Compromise Space • When you can not minimize or separate hazards you should “COMPROMISE SPACE” • Give as much space as possible to the greater hazard
Execute • How will you control your speed? • accelerate or brake • Change Direction by doing what? • steer • How will you communicate with other drivers? • signal, lights, hand gestures, horn • Combine actions
SMITH System • Used in the “identify” process • It is an organized method to help drivers develop good seeing habits • Aim High in Steering • Keep your Eyes Moving • Get the BIG PICTURE • Make sure others see you • Leave yourself an out! “Always Keep Getting in My Lane”
SMITH SYSTEM “ART GALLERY” • Choose a group of 4-5 people to work with • Each person choose one step of the SMITH SYSTEM • Each person must illustrate their step through pictures • Pictures will be drawn on the paper in the hallway • BE CREATIVE!
