What happened before the Peloponnesian war? • Athens and Sparta are fighting the Persians to protect themselves from invasions. • The Athenians and Spartans are successful and defeat the Persians during the many battles known as the Persian wars.
Causes of the Peloponnesian war • Athens is a democracy • Sparta is an oligarchy • Both have won battles and want to take all the power they can get • Some Athenians move into other city-states
Rivals are formed Athens Sparta • Already a Military state • Peloponnesian league created in Peloponnese (a peninsula) • Athens has built a strong naval empire • Delian League created near Athens Sparta declares war on Athens
The Athenian empire • The Delian League was formed by Athens and its allies • They met in the island of Delos • The league supported a democratic government • Athens was the most powerful in the league • The league was more of an Athenian empire • City-states were forced in and had to make money contributions for their navy • It was hard to get out of the League, at one point one city-state tried getting out and Athens made war on them.
The peloponnesian league • Sparta formed an alliance with city states of the Peloponnesian peninsula • This league supported a oligarchic government • They tried to expand their rule over other city states • Athens placed a ban on trade with Mergara, a member of the Peloponnesian league and this angered Sparta • The both got ready for war
The peloponnesian war • Sparta marched in to Athens • The Spartans settled down for a siege (force them to surrender and cut off their food supply) • Athens resisted for a year and didn’t give in because they were prepared for this. • A plague broke out in Athens, thousands of people died and the Spartans left. BUT THE WAR CONTINUED • Athens fought the coastal cities and Sparta fought by land • They finally agreed to a truce and the war ended
There they go again • Athens launched a military invasion on Sicily • The Spartans helped the people of Sicily, and together they defeated Athens • Spartans attacked the Athenians at Helenspont • Spartans attacked the city state of Athens by cutting their resources. (Athens was not getting their food) • Athens surrendered their empire and gave up.
Outcome of the peloponnesian war • Cities around Greece were destroyed • Governments fell apart • Trading dropped • Greece was divided by war and the city-states continued to fight each other
