  2. The most frequently used negative words in Spanish are: • Nada- nothing • Nadie- no one, nobody • Nunca - never • Ni…ni- neither…nor • Ninguno(a, os, as) (ningún)- not one, not any

Review and contrast the following negative and affirmative words. • Algo (something) Nada (nothing) • Alguien (someone) Nadie (no one) • Siempre (always) Nunca (never) • Algún (some) ningún (no/none) • También (also) tampoco (neither, either) • …él tiene o un perro o un gato (he has either a dogor a cat) … él no tiene ni un perro ni un gato (he has neither a dognor a cat)

  4. 3. In Spanish the placement of a negative word can vary and unlike English, more than one negative word can be used in the same sentence. • Ex: Ella nunca va allá. Ella no va allá nunca. • Nadie está en casa. No está nadie en casa.

  5. 4. Note that the personal A must be used with alguien or nadie when either of these words is the direct object of the sentence and refers to a specific person (or persons). Ex: Ella llama a alguien. Ella no llama a nadie. 5.Tampoco is the negative Word that replaces también. Ex: Ella lo sabe también. Ella no lo sabe tampoco. (Ni yo tampoco.)

  6. Practice (+/- words) Make the sentences negative • 1. Tengoalgoquehacer. • 2. Conozco a alguien de Costa Rica. • 3. Uds. siempre miran la television.

  7. Practice #2 4. Él sabe hablar o francés o español 5. Tenemos algún examen el martes. 6. Ella va al cine también.
