  1. Cellular Division:Adult Stem Cells By: Maria Sansom and Pat Bampfield

  2. Cell Division • The division of genetic DNA to two daughter cells • Occurs in all living organisms • Eukaryotic cells go through a specific type of cellular division • -Mitosis

  3. Mitosis • Process in which new cells are created • Made up of 6 stages • 1. Interphase • 2. Prophase • 3. Metaphase • 4. Anaphase • 5. Telophase • 6. Cytokinesis

  4. Interphase • Phase between cell division, resting point • Made up of stages • -G1 • -S Phase • G2

  5. Prophase • First stage • Chromosomes condense • Centrioles are formed • The nuclear membrane disappears • The mitotic spindles form

  6. Metaphase • The centrioles move • The chromosomes come together • They form a line across the cell

  7. Anaphase • The spindle fibers begin to shorten • Causes a force to separate the sister chromatids • The fibers continue to shorten • Chromatids gain identical amount of chromosomes

  8. Telophase • When the chromosomes finally separate • The nuclear envelope is formed Cytokinesis • The ending process of Mitosis • The final step, two daughter cells are now formed

  9. Animal Kingdom • -the main classification of living organisms that includes animals as well. • Adult Stem Cells are apart of the Animal Kingdom • Humans are the top of the animal kingdom so as it goes down the chain, adult stem cells are included in the human body so they are part of this kingdom

  10. Adult Stem Cells • Adult Stem cells are eukaryotic cells • They produce the several types of cells • Which maintain the body’s tissues and organs • Ability to divide and reproduce indefinitely • Example of adult stem cells • -Mesenchymal stem cells

  11. Mesenchymal Stem Cells • They can form several types of cells • -fat cells • -cartilage • -bone • -tendon • -ligaments • -muscle cells • -skin and nerve cells

  12. Positives • Stem cells are not found all throughout the human body • They are not able to regenerate • So adult stem cells can help this problem • By injecting them into the diseased area of the organ

  13. Adult Stem Cells • Scientists are learning more about them • Can save hundreds of thousands of lives a day
