  5. Partner Debate Discuss each of the scenarios below with a partner. Decide whether or not a person should place duty and responsibility above his/her own personal happiness. Why/why not? It’s okay to disagree with your partner--just make sure to write down both opinions.

  6. Should a husband and wife stay together for the sake of the children? • Peter Singer, a philosopher, suggests that every American should give away 10% of his/her salary to poor people in needy countries. Should someone have to sacrifice his/her money in order to help strangers?

  9. Should a woman have to give up her career in order to take care of children? • Should a grown child have to take care of his/her sick, elderly parent? What if that parent needs constant attention, e.g. needs to be bathed, fed, or given medicine regularly? When would it be asking too much?

Synopsis • “A classic novel of despair, forbidden emotion, and sexual undercurrents set against the austere New England countryside” • Ethan Frome works his unproductive farm and struggles to maintain a bearable existence with his difficult, suspicious, hypochondriac wife, Zeena. But when Zeena’s vivacious cousin enters their household as a “hired girl,” Ethan finds himself obsessed with her and with the possibilities for happiness she comes to represent. In one of American fiction’s finest and most intense narratives, Edith Wharton moves this ill-starred trio toward their tragic destinies.
