Overall Layout of Presentation • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) • The future of EDI • My Conclusions • Questions
The Future of EDI • The future looks grim. Alas, every technology must eventually die. • EDI over the internet, thanks to RFC 1865 we can eliminate the VAN • XML as an EDI replacement
Recall… EDI Example EDI Doc Sender Machine VAN EDI Document EDI Document EDI Doc X- Lator Client Machine X- Lator Raw Data Raw Data DB DB
EDI over the Internet Internet Encrypted Sender Machine Could be FTP or E-mail Document Encrypted Doc Encrypted Doc Encr- ypt Client Machine De- crypt XML Document XML Document DB DB X- Lator X- Lator Raw Data Raw Data
Acknowledging a Transmission Probably by E-Mail Internet EDI Doc Sender Machine Functional Acknowledgement (997) EDI Document X- Lator Client Machine X- Lator RFC 1865 - Defines all of this and all options (FTP, E-Mail, Internet VAN) Defines Encryption schemes(RSA, S-MIME), Everything!
XML Solution Today Internet Encrypted Sender Machine Document Encrypted Doc Encrypted Doc Encr- ypt Client Machine De- crypt XML Document XML Document DB DB X- Lator X- Lator Raw Data Raw Data
XML Solution Tomorrow Internet Encrypted Sender Machine Document Request XML Doc Encrypted Doc Encrypted Doc Client Machine Encrypted Doc DB DB
My Conclusions • EDI should and will be eliminated • XML should/will be used sparingly at first • XML needs some more industry standard DTD’s before it will really take hold
Questions Ask your questions now: This is NOT a political statement! It is simply a picture to get the point across, that it is time for questions!
