Rio Vivido DESIS Rio Rio New interactions between older people (locals) and tourists Federal University of Rio de Janeiro UFRJ
Context. Loneliness and unexplored capabilities on older people Rio de Janeiro and tourism appeal Older people know Rio de Janeiro and ”hidden” stories about the city Images illustrative only (the images have not been taken during the service operation). The photos were a test and included the participation of a research project (Fernanda Zanela) and a voluntary participant. (Ana Falcão).
A collaborative service between older people who lives in Rio de Janeiro and tourists, through domestic hospitality. ... to promote active aging; to show the value of older people in their community; to respond to the increasing demand for a alternative accommodation in the city; and to encourage the use of new technologies by older people (to manage the on-line bookings).
New interactions (older people and tourists) § reduction of social isolation and risk of loneliness Benefits for older people § new skills (particularly in technology) § practice of cognitive activities § development trust and solidarity between generations §income generation Coordinator: Profa. Carla Cipolla - cipolla@pep.ufrj.br | DESIS Group – Service Design and Social Innovation
New interactions (older people and tourists) Benefits for tourists § promotion of a responsible tourism through interaction with the local community § privileged access to cultural heritage in Rio through contact with the elderly people in their homes Coordinator: Profa. Carla Cipolla - cipolla@pep.ufrj.br | DESIS Group – Service Design and Social Innovation
Governance and Policy Making Active aging New generation of social services New connections between secretaries (tourism and social services) and different demands The project is based on the ""active aging concept (health - participation – security) which is informing public policies in Rio de Janeiro municipality.
Civic Participation and the city Valorization of Cultural heritage Strengthened relations with the city, its stories and meanings Promotion of responsible tourism The project involves older people who have skills, interesting life stories or good experiences linked the city, as part of the "cultural heritage" in Rio. These older people will allow tourists an experience in Rio de Janeiro from the point of view of a older person who lives in the city. The older people remain active, integrated and participating in their community. The project is supported by an online platform, which contain the registrations of guests and hosts.
Job Creation Income generation Is possible to replicate this service in other cities, involving older people and tourists. It generates income for the elderly people. The opportunities that emerge from this service are: a new hosting model; and personal skills of the older people as a value.
Storytelling The project is based on the life story of the older people as the key value of service. Therefore, tools like storytelling and "personas" are used.
Example 2 Learning from social innovations www.transitsocialinnovation.eu
DESIS Informal, Formal, Collaborative Designing within underserved communities. Rio Rio Federal University of Rio de Janeiro UFRJ
Learning from social innovations. Underserved communities are complex social ecosystems. Despite the lack of resources and services, they are rich of human capital, relations and collaborations expressed in social innovations What we can learn from them, to develop new models of services, based on collaborations and relations (for them and for all)?
Favela Orgânica http://favelaorganica.com/category/materias/page/2/ Favela orgânica is an entrepreneurial activity: it offers good quality food made of peels and leftovers of fruits and vegetables.

Social networking (global) and local interpersonal relations Regina takes the best advantage of the social global networks But also local networks: informal exchange of goods and services
Interpersonal relations were key for sucess Favela Organica was possible based on local interpersonal networks, activated by Regina Tchelly. She activate a “exchange system of goods, services and information" that enabled her to develop Favela Orgânica behavioural analysis of entrepreneurs from Rocinha (a slum in Rio de Janeiro) reveals a type of rationality which is strongly based on mutual stakeholder commitment and local social networks (Pereira & Bartholo, 2015).
What have we learned? Example 1: the key challenge was to design the interpersonal relations between elderly and older people Example 2: the interpersonal relations in the slum enabled the solution to exist www.transitsocialinnovation.eu
Interaction qualities relations Trust, intimacy, openness, Cipolla, 2004, 2009, 2012; Manzini, 2015 collaborations Capabilities, availability, attention, effort, time, specific skills Jegou/Manzini, 2008; Manzini, 2015
Principle-words cover every possible kind of encounter, neither being good or evil as such RELATIONS COLLABORATIONS I-You I - It When I interact with an It, I always confront something I know, that I know as an It and about which I might wish to know more through my actions of knowledge. When I relate to a "Thou", I always have before me a person whom I do not know entirely and whom I will never know unless I listen to what his presence tells me and lets me know of himself.
