Types of Shots • Extreme Long Shot (ELS or XLS) • Long Shot (LS) • Medium Long Shot/Knee Shot (MLS) • Medium Shot / Waist Shot (MS) • Medium Close Up / Bust Shot (MCU) • Close Up / Bust Shot (CU) • Extreme Close-Up (ECU)
Medium Shot
Extreme Long Shot (ELS or XLS) • A panoramic shot of the elements of a scene • To provide an overall view of a large scene
Long Shot / Full Shot (LS) • To provide a complete view of a person or an object • To show the positional relationship of the actors and their settings
Medium Long Shot / Knee Shot • A transitional shot from CU to LS or vice versa
Medium Shot / Waist Shot (MS) • To show the relationship between people in a shot or a scene • To draw attention to the actor’s upper body movement • A transitional shot
Medium Close-up / Bust Shot (MCU) • To give full facial details on the subject but without the strong impact of the close-up
Close Up / Bust Shot (CU) • To provide a close view of a face or and object • To draw more intense interest
Extreme Close Up (ECU) • To provide very intense viewing of a face or very small details of an object • To provide an extreme impact on the audience
Picture Composition • Use symmetrical division whenever possible • Place object on the center of the screen • Provide headroom • Provide noseroom or leadroom • Avoid unnecessary objects • Include interesting objects
Camera Angle • Level Angle • High Angle • Low Angle
Axis Camera Movement • Zoom In/Out • Pan Left/Right • Tilt Up/Down
If there is a conversation • Switch the camera from one side to the other
Forms of Audio • Narration (Voice Over) • Dialog • Music • Sound Effect
Your Video Must Include • Bars and colors: 3-5 secs • Different shots – LS, MS, CU etc. • Title page • Names of the producers • Names of other contributors • Narration/music/sound effects • Of course, quality shots • And no more than 5mins
Warning • Be ready for problems • Be patient • Plan in advance, do not postpone your project to the last minute.
