  1. 7 Deadly Sins

  2. 7 Deadly Sins • Pride/vanity is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. • Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation. • Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

  3. Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. • Wrath/Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. • Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. • Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

  4. Wife of Bath Very sinful woman: • She was lecherous (having or showing excessive sexual desires) / lustful • Gluttony = big hips, and her face stayed red perhaps from too much drinking • Wrathful = she was mean to everyone, and only cared about herself • Prideful = she took great pride in her appearance with fancy clothes

  5. Virtues • Patience • Humility • Chastity • Diligence • Abstinence • Temperance • Kindness

  6. Physiognomy • Ancient study that suggest physical attributes shape personality • Ex: Wife of Bath has “wide gapped teeth.” According to physiognomists, the teeth were symptomatic of scandalous infidelity. • Ex: Bulging eyes on the monk represent gluttony • Ex: the Reeve’s skinny calves represented his irritable, choleric nature

  7. The Pardoner • A pardoner is someone who travels about the countryside selling official church pardons. These were probably actually pieces of paper with a bishop’s signature on then, entitling the person for forgiveness for their sins.

  8. The Pardoner • Read the description of the Pardoner • Underline descriptions and significant details about the Pardoner • Complete the Pilgrim Study Sheet for the Pardoner • Note any of the seven deadly sins the Pardoner may represent
