Multiplying Decimal Numbers by Powers of Ten • What is a power of ten? • Powers of ten are numbers we get by multiplying tens by 10 (i.e. 1 x 10 = 10, 10 x 10 = 100, 100 x 10 = 1000, 1000 x 10 = 10 000) • When you multiply decimal numbers by powers of ten, it is very important that you know your place values!!!

  8. Multiplying Decimals by 10 • So as you can see, 9537.24 x 10 = 95 372.40***Moving the digits one place to the LEFTlooks the same as moving the decimal point one place to the RIGHT.

  10. Multiplying Decimals by 100 This is the number we started with... Notice, that I have put zeroes in the decimal places that I’ve moved numbers out of...remember, zeroes after the decimal don’t really count, but we’ll need them (in this case) when we multiply by powers of 10 larger than 100.
