The Atmosphere before life • Very different from our current atmosphere. • Consisted mainly of: • Ammonia (NH3) • Carbon Dioxide(CO2) • Methane(CH4) • Water Vapour(H2O)
NO OXYGEN!?!? • U.V. radiation from the sun caused CHEMICAL REACTIONS that lead to LIFE • ~1 Billion years later BLUE-GREEN ALGAE (BGA) began to form.
Photosynthesis The Blue Green Algae converted CO2 and water in the atmosphere to glucose and oxygen. CO2 + H2O-> O2 + Glucose Result: Decreased CO2 Increased O2
As the amount of O2 increased. OZONE (O3) formed. • The ozone layer began to form and was able to FILTER OUT U.V. RADIATION. • Allowed for more complex life
So What is in the Atmosphere Now? ppm=parts per million
Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon make up approximately: • 99.964% of the atmosphere today.
The Increase of Carbon Dioxide • We have seen a giant increase in CO2 since the industrial revolution ~30% • Much of the CO2 emissions are a result of burning FOSSIL FUELS • Human caused global warming is called anthropogenic global warming
What are the Effects? • An overall INCREASE in the world’s TEMPERATURE • Polar ICECAPS are melting • This causes the ocean currents to change
