  3. Medieval England William the Conqueror takes control of England in 1066 AD. His great-great-great successor is John I of England. Under John I the nobles and freemen of England force John to Sign the Magna Carta.

  4. The Magna Carta What is it? Why is it important? First document in Human history to place limits on royal power. First Document ever forced on a King by his Subjects. First document to legally limit the power of the King (Only in England).

  5. The Magna Carta What is it? Why is it important? Prevented the King from collecting taxes from the nobles without their consent Guaranteed the nobles a right to a trial by Jury. Guaranteed other rights for noble and freemen.

  6. The Crusades What is really Important? ThreeThings: #1: Helps begin to Crack Feudalism Authority of the King increases over Nobility. Levies taxes to pay for Armies. Some Nobles will die in battle with no heir: land goes to King. Many lesser Nobles will lose their land raising money for armies. Some Serfs will become free farmers or artisans in towns.

  7. The Crusades What is really Important? #2: Europeans have extended contact with more advanced Byzantine & Muslim Civilizations. Broadens European view of the world. ‘Hey there is stuff beyond the Manor.’ Italian Cities of Venice and Genoa become rich because trade increased along the Mediterranean. Contact with the ‘East’ spurred demanded for luxury goods: Spices, Sugar, Melons, tapestries, silks, and other items.

  8. The Crusades What is really Important? #3: Improvement in Technology. Learn more advanced methods of making ships, using magnetic compasses, and more accurate maps (Thanks to the Muslims). New war techniques. Europeans learn ‘the siege’ and new improvements in Weaponry. Fun Fact: Muslims don’t get as much of a benefit. But do realize to unite against a common enemy.
