What is Science? • What do you THINK? • Science is the concerted human effort to understand the history of the natural world and how the natural world works, with observable physical evidence as the basis of that understanding. • It is done through observation of natural phenomena, and/or through experimentation that tries to simulate natural processes under controlled conditions. • Make observations about the object at the front!

  8. Grade 9 Course Outline There are four units… • Biology - Ecosystems • Chemistry – Atoms and Elements • Physics – Electricity • Earth & Space Science – The Universe

  9. EXPECTATIONS • RESPECT – others, yourself and the classroom. • Be on time! • Have a positive attitude! • Don’t talk when someone else is talking. • Do not interfere with the learning of other students. • HAND IN YOUR WORK! (duh..) • No foul language. • HAVE FUN!SCIENCE ROCKS!

  10. TIPS FOR SUCCESS! You will need to bring these things to class: • A three ringed binder • Lined paper, blank paper and graph paper • Pen, pencils, coloured pencils • A ruler • A calculator • Unit dividers • A SMILE !!

Mr. B’s Top Ten Lab Safety Rules • No HORSEPLAY or fooling around. • Wear goggles at all times when asked. • Ask for clarification if you don’t understand the lab instructions. • Report all accidents… -Burns-Water first, Cuts-Direct pressure • No contact lenses. Tie back long hair. • No “unauthorized” experiments. • No backpacks allowed in the science lab. • Please clean up after yourself…I’m not your butler!! • Use proper disposal containers. • Noeating or drinking.
