…They’re Gorges! Action Project by Clayton DeFisher
Originally: Keep the Gorges Gorgeous • Planned a hike/cleanup project in the gorges to make students on campus at Cornell aware of the natural areas close at hand. • Wanted to encourage spending time outdoors and taking advantage of natural scenes • Wanted to explore recreation activities such as rock and tree climbing. • Also wanted to integrate educational component about local ecosystem and geography.
Oxymoron of the day:Bureaucratic efficiency • Found pre-existing event: Day of Demeter • Emailed contact listed • Lead to contact within the Interfraternity Council • Lead to 6 Vice Pres. Of IFC • Each had a separate site for clean-up • Only two emailed back and that was just to confirm the date
Cornell Outdoor Education • Emailed Climbing Coordinator: Dr. Mark Holton • Got in contact with Todd Miner head of COE • Todd acted as main contact and advised what gorges were best, as well as suggesting a date, and providing publicity • Helped to plan long term goals for the project in order to build a framework for repeats in the future.
