Subject-Verb Agreement #8 • A subject may be singular or plural, depending on whether it refers to one person, place, thing, or idea, or whether it refers to more than one person, place, thing or idea. • The verb must agree with the subject. • Subjects and verbs in the present tense must agree in number: • singular subjects take verbs with singular endings • plural subjects take verbs with plural endings. Slide 1 of 3
In the present tense, when the subject is he, she or it or the equivalent of he, she, or it , use an s or esending on the verb . Example: He, she , it leaps. Tips for subject-verb agreement: • Generally, if the subject does not end in s, the verb will. Example: Johnruns every day.(singular subject – singular verb) • If the subject does end in s, the verb will not. Example: The boysrun every day. (plural subject – plural verb) Slide 2 of 3 PowerPoint ~ C.Cunningham ~ EAP 0380/0480
