What this session is NOT…. • Boring stuff you MIGHT use someday • Me reading you a PowerPoint • A MUST be nice… session • Quote I LIVE by: • Don’t wait until it’s perfect to try it. • Debbie Swartz- Library Technology Facilitator- MISD
What this session is…(I hope) • Helpful stuff you can go back and use right now • Time to really talk to other librarians about what we DO to keep the library the most POPULAR place on campus • A starting point of putting some SPARKLE in your library
What makes my library POPULAR? • It’s a fun place for kids AND teachers to hang out • It’s never TOO serious • I have fun and that is CONTAGIOUS! • It’s so much more than checking out and research
Library Helpers Show off new books to teachers first Put treats and notes in teachers’ boxes Keep administration informed about the happenings in the library NO MORE NEWSLETTERS- try Glogster, animoto, go animate
6. Send fun videos just because… Try Jib Jab • Apple Cider in the Library for teachers 1 bottle Apple juice- 64 oz, 1 box Hot Tamales in a crockpot 8. Use EVERYTHING to promote books- screen savers, wall space, announcements, start every faculty meeting with a booktalk.
9. Goodbye song 10. Be more than a Wal-Mart Scanner- teach kids and teachers self service for checking out. 11. Send books down in the morning in a basket to be checked in 12. 12 days of Christmas in the Library
13. Invite yourself EVERYWHERE, site based meetings, PTA, ect Don’t get stuck in a it must be a library lesson rut Use teacher vocabulary so that they see you as a teacher. Really CELEBRATE Children’s Book Week Be a YES person (Thanks Mary) Less stuff, more people
19. Lunch bunch book club, before school, after school- whatever works 20. Teacher Book Clubs- Read Adult Books 21. What’s New in Children’s Literature Staff Development 22. Show, Don’t tell. Actually do lessons with kids using books. 23. Get outside the Library and see what’s going on in your school 24. Think Dust
25. Remember that you wanted this job. For me, it’s the job I was meant to do. Yes, we are all overworked and underappreciated. We are not the only ones. Teachers, Principals, and all other staff are busier, under more pressure, and working harder than ever. Be the SPARKLE in their day!
