WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFiCKiNG? • The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force for the purpose of exploitation • Modern day slavery • Organized crime’s third largest source of money • 53 nations in Africa involved • South Africa is a ‘main destination’ • 38,000 child prostitutes in South Africa • 25% of them are homeless children

HOW ARE OTHER COUNTRiES INVOLVED? • It happens in many major countries • Economic status • Social traditions • Victims travel across borders • 700,000 women and children every year • 16,000 trafficked directly to the United States • Majority of buyers from western nations • We are just as much involved in it as South Africa

  4. WHO ARE THE TRAFFiCKERS? FOUR MAJOR RECRUITERS • Organized Crime Workers • Business Women • Sex Tourist • Refugees

  5. HOW DO ViCTiMS iNiTiALLY GET iNVOLVEDiN HUMAN TRAFFiCKING? • PASSiVE WAY • ACTiVE WAY • DEBT BOUNDAGE • INNOCENT WOMEN ARE TRiCKED AND DECIEVED • PARENTS ARE LIED TO THINKING THAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE GOING TO BE IN SAFE HANDS

  6. PROCESS OF BEiNG RECRUiTED • ViCTiMS ARE STUCK INTO THiS • DANGEROUS BUSiNESS. • THE TRAFFiCKERSWiLL NOT LET ANY OF THEiR SLAVES GO FREE. • ONLY WAY OUT IS RESCUE, ESCAPE OR DEATH.

  7. WHAT IS BEiNG DONE TO FiGHT IT? • Problems: policies not framed effectively, governments fail to emphasize stopping it, underground nature, lack of communication. • Approved charters • Hotlines • Non-governmental organizations • Personal volunteering • Awareness • Petitioning
