College Name Change Feasibility Study Proposal. Objective.

Objective • Green River Community College will study the possibility of changing the College’s name to reflect the quality and level of education available at the institution and the evolution from a two-year college to a hybrid institution that offers both two- and four-year degrees. • Proposed name change would be from “Green River Community College” to “Green River College”.

Preliminary research • Of the 34 CTCs, 13 two-year colleges do not have “Community” or “Technical” in their name. • Four colleges in the CTC system were originally named without the terms community or technical: • Grays Harbor College • Lower Columbia College • Peninsula College • Wenatchee Valley College • An additional six colleges in the CTC system changed their name more than 25 years ago: • Clark College • Olympic College • Skagit Valley College • Centralia College • Pierce College Puyallup & Fort Steilacoom
Preliminary research • In the last five years, two CTCs have changed their names: • 2011 - Lake Washington Technical College changed to Lake Washington Institute of Technology • 2009 - Bellevue Community College changed to Bellevue College • Seattle Community Colleges District could make the change as early as the 2014-15 academic year.
Timeframe Proposed Study Timeline: • January – December 2014 • Comprehensive outreach campaign to gather stakeholder opinions, insight and feedback • Analysis of the financial and operational feasibility • Deliverable: Feasibility Study Report • December 2014 • Present Feasibility Study Report to Board of Trustees for consideration and deliberation • January 2015 • Board of Trustees makes a decision on name change
