  6. The mud is pumped into the drill pipe from the ship, and then circulated out into the borehole from the drill bit. Removing Cuttings Protecting and stabilizing the Borehole Wall On board Sea level Cooling and Lubrication of the Bit Sea floor The mud acts as a lubricant for the bit and protects the bit from wear and tear. It also cools the bit against the rising temperatures inside the Earth. Mud containing cuttings rises through the rise pipe and is returned to the ship for cuttings analysis and reuse Drilling Method Using Mud Circulation
