The AeneidBook III Isabella, Jenny, and John
Antandros • After the fall of Troy Aeneas takes the survivors to Antandros • They build a new fleet of ships
Thrace • The first place the Trojans sail to • Aeneas offers sacrifices to his mom & other gods • Aeneas rips the roots and limbs of a tree which then drips dark blood • The tree reveals itself as the spirit of Polydorus, the son of Priam • Polydorus was sent to Thrace to to stay out of the war, but after Troy was destroyed the Thracian King sided with the Greeks and killed him • The Trojans perform funeral rights for Polydorus then leave
Delos: Apollo’s Island • The Trojans sail to Delos and are greeted by friends from the island and King Anius • Aeneas prays at Apollo’s altar for an omen, then the ground trembles and the altar splits open • Apollo tells Aeneas to journey to the land of his ancestors • Anchises interprets this as the island of Crete so they leave once again
Crete • After arriving at Crete the Trojans begin to build a city named Pergamum • The city runs smoothly at first (marriages, new tillage, laws and homes created) but then a plague strikes • A famine destroys the men’s bodies and crops
Crete • Anchises wants to go back to Delos to pray to Apollo again and ask what to do • Aeneas dreams of the gods of Troy who tell him that his father was mistaken and that the land of their ancestors is actually Italy • The Trojans set out again
The Storm • While sailing towards Italy a storm approaches • The crew wanders for three days • On the fourth day they see land, which is the shores of Strophades
Strophades • Strophades is the island of Celaeno and the Harpies (harmful monsters with birds bodies, claws, and girls faces) • Aeneas and the crew slaughter herds of cattle for a feast but the harpies swoop down and spoil the food, provoking a fight • The Trojans try to fend them off but anger Celaeno, who curses them (they’ll reach Italy but be hungry)
Buthrotum in Chaonia • They reach Buthrotum and discover that Helenus, another son of Priam, has become king of a Greek city and talk to both Andromache and Helenus (taken by Pyrrhus as war prisoners) • Andromache tells Aeneas about their captivity and how they came to rule the city • Helenus tells Aeneas how to get to Italy
How to Get to Italy • Stay to the left (the longer journey) and avoid Scylla and Charybdis • Scylla = lady with dolphin fins and the bellies of wolves • Charybdis = a whirlpool that also spews out the water creating a hurricane • Helenus also tells them to pray to Juno and gain her favor and visit a phrophetess in Avernus who will tell them their future toils and grant them a prosperous journey
Sicily • They barely avoid the monsters and drift onto the shores of Sicily where Mt. Etna is erupting • A Greek stranger, named Achaemenides, runs up to the Trojans and pleads to them
Sicily • He tells them the story of Ulysses and the cyclopsPolyphemus and warns about the other cyclops on the island • Polyphemus and other cyclops arrive and the Trojans flee with the stranded Greek
FamiliarIslands and Drepanum • After the Trojans escape the cyclops they continue on their journey towards Italy and sail past familiar islands making sacrifices and praying to the gods • In DrepanumAchises dies • Finally the crew washes up on Dido’s shores
