10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 1: The Pastor/leader must catch the revelation form God to Sponsor. It all begins with the leader. Typically, as the Pastor goes so goes the church. The pastor is the key to reaching the harvest through church sponsoring. If he is willing, almost always the people are willing. If the pastor is hesitant, the people will be reluctant to move ahead and sponsor. Consider the following questions:
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church 1. Why would the Pastor not want to plant? “Planting new churches is the closest we have to a guaranteed means of reaching more people with the Good News that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. The historical record is clear that we cannot rely on long-established congregations to reach all the new generations of people” - Lyle Schaller
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church 2. What questions will have to be answered to get the Pastor to consider partnering and sponsoring? “Church Planting is not a denominational priority, any church can plant a new one. Church Planting is not the outgrowth of a particular theology. All groups can do it, whether Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Methodist, Mennonite, Community or other. Church Planting is not a strategy of mega churches; all sizes of churches can plant a new church!” - SPIN-OFF CHURCHES
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church 3. What does the congregation think about partnering and sponsoring? “Rapid multiplication from one locality, seems close to what Jesus had in mind for the 12 apostles when He sent them from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria and then to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).” – Tom Cheyney, SPIN-OFF CHURCHES
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 2: Build a conviction to sponsor through prayer. Nothing short of a spiritual revival can save North America and prayer has to be the starting point. All spiritual awakenings have had one common characteristic: prayer. This should not surprise us because God made it clear early on in the life of Israel: “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place” (2 Chronicles 7:14,15). Need does not constitute burden. Prayer is the critical component. Pastors should make the time to take the time to spend time with God.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 2: Build a conviction to sponsor through prayer (continued). Quick Primer: • Need does not constitute burden. • Prayer is the critical piece in sponsoring. • Pastors should make the time to take the time to spend time with God.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 3: Cast the vision to the entire congregation. You have to get the people to “buy” into the sponsoring vision. Begin with key leaders. Put books into their hands. Take them to Sponsoring Starbuck’s Churches in a Folgers World, CPG conferences and attend the Partners in Church Planting Training Track with NAMB together. Go to: www.ChurchPlantingVillage.net and search for PiCP
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 3: Cast the vision to the entire congregation (continued). • If your vision is for a year, plant wheat. • If your vision is for ten years, plant trees. • If your vision is for a lifetime, plant a church!
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church • Vision is the first step a pastor leader must cast to the potential sponsoring congregation. • Vision grips a person with a sense of authority. Vision is not about what a person wants to do. • Instead, vision is about God helping a person draw a mental image—a picture—of what God expects His servant to do. • The Vision must be clear, compelling, and common to all those God draws around it.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Vision is the dream given by God unsually birthed in either the sponsoring church leader first and then the planter closely behind that vision, but ultimately owned by the new congregation. It is the fire, flavor and fuel that drives a new churches unique expression of the Great Commission. God-given visions are always impossible to achieve apart from God!
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church A vision creates tremendous enthusiasm and energy in the present about the desired future of your church. A vision captures and maximizes the special uniqueness about your church. A vision draws people in and calls them to commitment and involvement.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church In casting the vision beware of some obstacles you will have to clear. 1. Apprehension & Fright 2. Assets (What will it cost?) 3. Asset of friendships 4. Investment of leadership 5. Lack of expertise 6. Superiority (We can do it all so we don’t need a new plant, we can minister to everyone!) 7. Self-centeredness 8. Not “Our Thing” right now! 9. Timing of the sponsoring churches role 10. Ownership
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 4: Cultivate the resources The sponsor church has many resources necessary to help a new church get going. The four key resources needed to be cultivated: 1. Capital 2. Kin: Sorry no C! (a fishing pool for leaders and workers) Connections maybe! 3. Care and supervision 4. Cultivation of team members for team

10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Avoid the 3 Biggest Mistakes In Church Sponsoring* 1. Moving forward with plans before the entire congregation has bought in and owns the vision to sponsor a new church! 2. Poor planter selection and lack of a clear new church action plan (Planting is vogue right now but it is work) 3. Inability to release control of the new church. *More assistance on the Top Ten Mistakes Sponsoring Churches Make can be found at the Church Planters Resources Café @ www.PlanterDude.comand SPIN – OFF Churches: How One Church Successfully Sponsors Another by Tom Cheyney and Rodney Harrison (B & H Publishing).

Advance strategically & purposefully 4. Calculate your progress & navigate the problems 5. Keep your people on board by showing the results *More information regarding TRACK can be found in The Ripple Church by Phil Stevenson
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 7: Make the Investment. Anything worthwhile has a cost involved. A sponsor church will make five incredible investments: 1. Resources (people) 2. Riches (dollars) 3. Ranch Space (terrain) 4. Reach Resources (territory) 5. Rate of Development (momentum) Sponsoring always costs something, but the results are always worth it!
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 8: Commemorate the release. When releasing the sponsoring team be sure to design a service that is a combination of commemoration, celebration and commission. Always remember the trinity of releasing the new church plant!
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church How To “Let Go” of the New Church • Emotionally, keep telling yourself to let go! It's not easy. 2. Continue to honor your financial commitments to the new church, but don't second-guess the decisions that the new church is making. Trust them!
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church How To “Let Go” of the New Church 3. Recognize your changing relationship with both the church planter and the new church. 4. As the sponsor, know when to pull the plug for good and let the new church stand on its own.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church How To “Let Go” of the New Church 5. If the new church is not released, the relationship between the two churches will be troubled long-term. First, the sponsor church won't recover as quickly, because it will be focusing on the needs of two churches. And secondly, the new church won't develop rightly. It will either develop resentment or dependency (or both) toward the sponsor church. So releasing the new church is crucial to its long-term health.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church How To Commemorate Its Success 1.Continue to pray for the new church publicly, with thankfulness to God for the lives that are being changed. 2.Celebrate the grand opening by video taping the service and playing parts of it to the sponsor church. 3.Have the planter come on Sunday night or Wednesday night and share an update of how the new church is progressing. 4.Celebrate the first baptism service. Take pictures and show them to the sponsor church.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church How To Commemorate Its Success 5. Celebrate the first anniversary service. Recount how God has blessed and been at work during the first year. 6.Invite the new church to participate and go with you to the state evangelism meeting. Go with the planter to the Pastor's & Wives Retreat and other district functions. Move from acting like the "sponsor" church, to treating them as a "sister" church. (But just know that as the sponsor, you will always feel the pride a sponsor feels when your child does well!) 7. Schedule the formal church organization service at a time when people from the sponsor church can join in the celebration by attending.
10 Stages to Sponsoring A Growing, Healthy Multiplying Church Stage 9: Give attention to the recuperation. The sponsor needs to concentrate on stabilizing. Make sure you regain your footing monetarily, spiritually, psychologically, numerically and relationally. This recovery time will often depend on the health of the sponsor prior to the birth.
