  4. The Tale Of Two States • Because the CSRA represents two states often Augusta is overlooked when only the Georgia side of the region is considered. • Augusta is the location of a major medical school and numerous hospitals and has one of the highest number of physicians per capata of any community in the U.S. • For that reason other Metro Augusta’s significant other bio resources are overlooked.

  5. The Augusta Uniqueness • A discovery made during the middle of the 20th Century while not getting a lot of attention makes the Metro Augusta trade very unique. • This is of particular interest with today’s focus on bio development and high tech.

  6. The Augusta Uniqueness • A basin filled with Triassic red beds, located on the SouthCarolina–Georgia line  southeast of Augusta, Georgia, buried beneath  Coastal Plain sediments namedthe Dunbarton Triassic basin. • Dunbarton was one of the small towns occupied by the Federal Government in the early 1950’s to build the Savannah River Site.

  7. The Augusta UniquenessThe Triassic Period248 to 206 Million Years Ago

  8. The Augusta Uniqueness • In many ways, the Triassic was a time of transition. It was at this time that the world-continent of Pangaea existed. The Triassic also follows the largest extinction event in the history of life. • Among the creatures of the world was the modern dinosaur. • Buried Triassic Basin discovered in the Central Savannah River Area, South Carolina and Georgia

  9. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™

  10. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™ For the purpose of this presentation I will refer to the collective bio, health science, natural science, education and medical resources as The Triassic Basin Where Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™

  11. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™Augusta Bioscience Region The Regional Identity (Georgia Only) The Augusta Bioscience Georgia six county region serves as the bridge between the Innovation Crescent connecting Atlanta to Athens and The Trassic Basic area of the CSRA. The life sciences industry cluster is difficult to simply define as it is quite broad in the products produced. The terms biotechnology and life sciences are often used interchangeably to describe areas dealing with • Health • Medicine • Biology • Nutrition • Agriculture, and • The technologies thereof. Biotechnology is defined by the Biotechnology Industry Organization as  "the use of cellular and molecular processes to solve problems or make products".

  12. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™Augusta Bioscience Region For the purpose of this discussion life science encompasses • Biotechnology, • Health-tech and • Healthcare industries. There are five key industry sectors under life sciences that cover the majority of industries in the region: • Therapeutics (pharmaceutical, Vaccines and medical devices and biologicals), •  Diagnostics, • Agricultural, • Environmental and • Research and development. Healthcare is generally viewed as a "support industry" grouped under life sciences. Healthcare and life sciences are often linked together in regional economic analysis as they are integrated in the workforce areas of: • Skill/education development, • Higher wage options, • Career ladder opportunities and •  Growth industries. Applications from life sciences are applied in the healthcare arena and are often partnered in development and clinical trials.  The companies within the region utilize the platform systems of • Biotechnology, • Nanotechnology, and • Genomics.

  13. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™Augusta Bioscience Region They also include bioinformatics and the various suppliers to this heavily regulated industry group. 2009 Innovation Crescent Augusta Bioscience & Tiassic Basin Health-Tech Hub Work Ready Region Application 2 From 2001-2005, the life science industry expanded by : • 38.4% with an • 11 % increase in employment and a corresponding • 30% increase in wages. These companies, not including health care, make up • 668 businesses in the state with •  15,237 employees. While these numbers may appear small,

  14. The Triassic BasinWhere Innovation Comes To Play & Stay™Augusta Bioscience Region These companies represent a disproportionately higher share (at over 40%) of research expenditures  and revenues of the entire regional economy. Average annual salary at these companies totals; • $57,683. In metro Atlanta alone, • 237 bioscience companies employ more than •  10,000 workers. In the sectors of pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing alone, there are • 50 companies employing • 3420 workers. This does not include the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) which employs more than 6500 scientists and staff. Companies range in size from Merial, Ltd., a 5000-employee leader in animal health with annual sales of over $2.2B, to many small entrepreneurial companies emerging from the university environment. • Collectively, the life sciences industry accounted for 80% of the 1,358 patents issued in Georgia in 2005. • Georgia's life science community has been ranked the seventh in the number of public Bio Tech companies in the US. • The six Georgia counties have a combined population of 377,000. • Five of the six counties have unemployment rates at least 1 percent higher than the state average.
