Education Code - Charter School Closure Ed Code Subchapter 19. Charter Schools, Article 1.2. Closure Procedures, 11962 – Article 1.2. Closure Procedures: (a) Designation of a responsible entity to conduct closure-related activities. (b) (Not included, as it does not apply.) (c) Provision of a list of pupils in each grade level and the classes they have completed, together with information on the pupils’ districts of residence, to the responsible entity designated in subdivision (a). (d) Transfer and maintenance of all pupil records, all state assessment results, and any special education records to the custody of the responsible entity designated in subdivision (a), except for records and/or assessment results that the charter may require to be transferred to a different entity. 5

Charter School Closure Reporting Exit all students. Exit date must be on or before official closure date. Any enrollments with a start date after the official closure date must be deleted. Closure Prior to March 1st: Complete current year submissions of Fall 1, Fall 2, & EOY 1-4 Closure after March 1st: Complete current year submissions of Fall 1, Fall 2, Spring 1, & EOY 1-4 • Charters serving grades 7-12: Complete Fall 1 during next school year to report graduates and dropouts 7
Charter School Closure Reporting Anomalies that impact other LEAs’ Fall 1 certification must be corrected Charter CALPADS data should be transferred to the Authorizing Agency (recommended) 8
Education Code - Authorizing Agency Ed Code 47604.32 Each chartering authority, in addition to any other duties imposed by this part, shall do all of the following with respect to each charter school under its authority: (a) Identify at least one staff member as a contact person for the charter school. (b) Visit each charter school at least annually. (c) Ensure that each charter school under its authority complies with all reports required of charter schools by law. (d) Monitor the fiscal condition of each charter school under its authority. 9

Key Points When a charter closes or becomes inactive, it must be reported in CALPADS. Charters failing to meet state and federal reporting requirements may experience consequences, including funding cuts or revocation/non-renewal of the school’s charter. Authorizing LEAs must ensure that their charters meet state reporting requirements. Failing to do so could have negative consequences for the authorizing LEA. 15
