  2. Risk Assessments Goals • Ensure the safety of people and property • Promote tree and forest health toward reducing future hazards

  3. Hazard Tree • A tree that has been assessed as having characteristics that, in the opinion of a qualified assessor, make it an unacceptable risk for continued retention.

  4. When is it a “hazard”?

  5. Targets ? • Houses and buildings • Powerlines • Roads • Parking areas or driveways • Yards, patios and fences • Play areas

  6. Size of Part ? • < 6 inches • 6-18 inches • 18-30 inches • >30 inches i.e. “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”

  7. Probability of Failure ? Species specific Root decays Leans Cracks/Seams Crown class Disturbance history Live crown ratio
